Bio

Born on September 25 in Toronto, Canada, Jazz Fusion Pianist Desarae Dee was encouraged by her parents to explore every musical talent she had and to push to be the best that she could be. Desarae is a powerhouse pianist/keyboardist who made her artist debut in 2014 and has been making major waves in the Toronto music scene ever since. She was dubbed “Toronto’s Fusion Pianist” by BUZZMUSICLA for her remarkable piano technique and repertoire. With a playing style often described as "unconventional and spontaneous," she blends elements of Jazz, Neo-Soul, Gospel, and more, allowing the genres to peacefully coexist and blend into something new altogether. The versatility of her music has earned her a reputation as a musician who pushes boundaries and bends genres in a way that has retained her popularity. She has gained a widespread audience on Instagram through her Cover Tuesdays Series (circa 2017), 30 Second Collabs Series (circa 2021) and her various song reharmonizations via Instagram REELS.

She has had the honour of playing for a number of Toronto’s biggest and brightest stars (Shopé, Tafari Anthony, James Baley, Karen Jewels, Fame Holiday, Romeyo Wilson & others) and was the Music Director for Grammy contender and Billboard charting artist Matt B and NAACP & Stellar Award Winning Christian R&B artist Sean C. Johnson on their respective Toronto tours in 2019. Desarae has also been a featured artist for a number of Toronto festivals (Sofar Sounds Toronto, Canadian Music Week, Burdock Piano Fest, Landmark Showcase Festival) and had her first TV Debut on YesTV's "Outside the Box with Sheldon Neil" in 2017.

Because of her unique ability to simultaneously give you everything you need to hear and something you've never heard before, her music has landed on some great Spotify playlists, as well as been played on a number of radio stations internationally (GudTymes Radio LA, Extreme Exposure Radio, Totally Wired Radio, Affinity Extra UK, SoulBeats Netherlands, 88.1 WVPE Radio, Power 106.8 Miami, Excitement Radio, Groove Radio Detroit, Gospel Grind Radio, The Star Radio, Da Blaze 88.7FM, 102.8FM Los Angeles) and in Canada (Vancouver Coop Radio, G98.7FM, iLive Radio, Power 102.1 Toronto). Desarae has also been the topic of conversation for music blogs and magazines; having multiple features with Los Angeles blog, BUZZMUSICLA, and features in Divine Magazine, Fruit Sonic, The Further, Your Music Experience Blog, Indie Music Discovery, Indie Dock Music Blog, Broadway World Music, Toronto Guardian, Rattler Magazine, Exclaim!, MUSICHYPEBEAST, Dreamwood Media, Sidedoor Magazine, Gritty Vibes Magazine and others. Desarae was also named “Artist of the Month” by Shifter Magazine in March 2021.

Having many musical successes and having to endure many obstacles throughout her artist journey, it wasn't until 2020 where Desarae finally had her breakout year, securing her first radio placement with her single, "Refocus" featuring Sean C. Johnson on Toronto's G98.7FM in the Gospel Rotation. She also successfully achieved her first 10,000 streams on her single, "LVLS" on Spotify and ending 2020 with 20,000+ combined streams worldwide. Desarae has continued her quest to reaching the world with her music and has taken 2021 by storm, releasing a total of 4 singles since February 2021. Her musical dominance has lead her to reach 50,000+ streams on Spotify worldwide in less than 6 months. Considering the risk she took 7 years ago going in the musical direction she did, this is quite the accomplishment. She has an extensive catalogue, having released 16 singles, 2 EPs and 1 album to date, with more music releases on the horizon and more visuals in the near future.

On June 25, 2021, Desarae released her 5th single, “Late Arrival (Remix)” which is one of 6 songs off of Desarae’s 2016 debut EP, "20." Exactly 5 years later, she celebrated the anniversary of the project by re-releasing a new version of the track, showing how art is never truly finished and celebrating the process of being an artist. A song that showcases Desarae’s musical growth and evolution over the last 5 years, “Late Arrival” has “all the chords you could think of” and stays true to the spontaneous and unconventional musical style that Desarae is widely known for. Consistently bending genres and pushing musical boundaries, she gives listeners a “sit in the pocket, laid back and chill” vibe that is a fusion of jazz, neo-soul, hip-hop and gospel nuances. Late Arrival is truly a song for the hopelessly soulful, the ‘start your day’ workaholic coffee drinkers and those who appreciate true musicianship. To accompany the new release, she also debuted the Official Music Video for Late Arrival in July 2021 via YouTube.

Desarae is always in constant evolution mode: always growing, learning and improving as an artist, musician and producer, and this continues to reign true throughout her musical journey. As someone who never saw herself represented in the Canadian Music Industry, Desarae took it upon herself to make a name for instrumental music from the perspective of the Black Woman, while continuing to break barriers in the industry and forge a path for current and future Black Women Musicians in Canada.
